Vario Roof Hydraulic System
The R170 SLK uses an electro-hydraulic system to operate its power retractable hardtop. The hydraulic pump generates the pressure used by the roof system’s hydraulic cylinders to raise, lower, latch and store the folding hardtop.
Common Symptoms
Possible symptoms associated with hydraulic roof system problems can include:
- Convertible top will not open or close
- Hydraulic pump motor does not operate
- Roof stops during operation
- Weak or slow roof movement
- Unusual noises from the hydraulic pump
Please note: These symptoms do not necessarily mean the hydraulic pump has failed. Low hydraulic fluid, leaking roof cylinders, electrical problems, relays, microswitches or other components can cause similar symptoms. Proper diagnosis is strongly recommended before ordering.

Important Installation Information

Leaking hydraulic cylinders can cause low fluid levels and place excessive load on the hydraulic pump. Replacing the pump without repairing an existing hydraulic leak may result in continued roof problems or damage to the replacement unit.
